Chapter Nineteen

KATE AND JUSTIN SAT side by side on the stairs, silently observing their once immaculate home. It looked like the inside of a snow globe that had been shaken. Every ornament was out of place, the contents of draws strewn about the floor. Muddy imprints of police boots on the usually spotless cream carpet could be seen at the entrance to the dining room and Kate wondered if they would ever come out or just remain a traumatic reminder until it was replaced. The boys were still watching Ninja Turtles, seemingly unphased by an event that had turned their parent’s life upside-down and inside-out. Justin placed his arm around Kate’s shoulder and she felt a love that she hadn’t felt for so long emanate from this simple gesture. A love that she had so desperately been searching for in another man’s bed yet had failed to find, and she felt herself filled with a renewed sense of hope for the marriage she had been desperately fighting for.

“I’ve tidied the boy’s rooms, the living room and the kitchen but haven’t got round to the rest,” Justin said, sensing her eyes inspecting the mess.

“It’s not easy cleaning and looking after those two is it? I was totally out of my depth...didn’t realise how much you did while I’m at work.”

Kate smiled and rested her forehead against his. They had finally made a connection between each other’s lives where empathy and understanding were to be found. He kissed her softly for a moment and they both shed a tear for the marriage that was damaged but not broken beyond repair.

“I’m going to make a start on the dining room,” Kate said with a sigh that indicated that it was a task she wasn’t relishing.

Stepping over the muddy boot prints, she made her way inside. This was one of her favourite rooms in the house with its long, French polished table where they often used to hold dinner parties. The chandelier shimmered as sunlight from the sash windows bounced off its crystals making prisms of light dance on the walls. She made a start on the dinner service which was still laid out on the floor, carefully placing each piece back in its rightful place inside the dark oak cupboard. There were fingerprints all over the glass doors and she made a mental note to clean them with her magic micro glove after she’d finished tidying.

After the crockery had been put away she turned to the chest of drawers. There had been all sorts of memorabilia tucked away safely in them. Items from the past, things that were cherished and yet hadn’t found a suitable place to live in the house. Kate carefully refolded the pure cotton tablecloths and placed them back in one of the top drawers along with the place settings and silver cutlery set her grandma had left her. They had gone through absolutely everything with a fine-toothed comb and even all the old photographs had been gone through one by one.
